I’m a little obsessed and intrigued with imperfection if I am honest. It’s something we are all insecure about. We work hard to overcome it and hide it most of our lives. When I started pottery, I was obsessed with making the perfect pot. I thought it was what we were supposed to do! Practice makes perfect right? It was impossible and it drove me crazy even thought I was still having fun!
In the summer of 2016, I had an opportunity to attend a two-week ceramic workshop at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass Colorado. During that time, I learned and worked with potters who were completely out of my league! They were artists that had their work all over the world in galleries! I noticed there was very little effort on their part to make something perfect, in fact it was quite the opposite. Their pieces were wonderful, unique and some were downright wonky! But they each had a style that was their brand, it was a reflection of their true self. It made me realize that trying to make perfect pots was not the goal, perfect doesn’t sell, authentic is where the magic is.
Recognizing the beauty of imperfection is something to strive for no matter who we are or what we do. We all spend too much time seeking perfection. When we can finally embrace the imperfections that make us real and make us unique, I believe we will find much joy and beauty in the life we have been given.
